Everyone Has A Story To Tell
This is ours
We're crazy about knowledge sharing. That's right, as strange as it may seem, we love something that most people don't even think about. The question is why?
It all began on a beach on the western tip of Cuba many years ago. As world travelers and tech enthusiasts two of the cofounders, Colin and Sedarius, were discussing starting a company which would enable them to see the world while pursuing a passion for innovation. Later that year, they started a software development company with offices in New York and Southeast Asia.
They were distributed from the beginning, managing two teams that lived on opposite sides of the globe. They built knowledge management platforms, SharePoint sites and custom portals for clients for over 5 years. But they kept running into this problem- no matter how much money people spent on SharePoint or building portals they almost always complained that they were too complex, too difficult to use, and that it was just really hard to find stuff.
Whether it was a local bakery with multiple storefronts around New York City or a consulting firm with offices all over the world, the problem was the same. So they kept thinking, "There's gotta be a better way! What if we could create a better, cheaper, easier way to share the things that are most important to distributed teams, like ourselves?"
Enter stage left, Tobias: an expert in running offshore IT teams and operations guru. At the time, Tobias lived in Manila managing his own software company. One evening after three too many beers, Sedarius and Tobias exchanged ideas about the product that would ultimately become Shelf. Soon afterwards, Tobias joined the team.
You'd be hard-pressed to find 3 people more nerded out and passionate about making it better and easier to share knowledge. In solving this problem the Shelf team went beyond building software and set out to understand the Science of Organization. They consulted Harvard librarians, knowledge management gurus, change management experts, and information architects. They worked with some of the leading experts in the world to make sure that the best practices and innovations in harnessing intellectual capital was at the very core of the product.
Shelf's DNA combines a knowledge management engine built like a Ferrari with the ease of use and practicality of a Honda Accord. Everything about Shelf, from the features to our customer support reflects the passion and drive of the founders to build a better way to harness knowledge and make things super easy to find and share.
It's Shelf's mission to help millions of distributed teams accelerate their ability to share, learn and succeed. We are reimagining the library for the workplace of tomorrow and won't stop until we've integrated all the important places where important content is buried.
