In the late 2000's two of Shelf’s founders, Sedarius Perrotta and Colin Kennedy, founded an outsourced software services company that works at the intersection of information problems and software solutions. The company was called Neuron Global and for more than eight years they ran hundreds of projects both big and small. The team learned tons of new things they never expected to like; natural language processing, semantic web technologies, machine learning algorithms and the like.
They also learned a lot of lessons through the problems that their client's experienced. A particularly troublesome one was how to properly capture, store, organize and share what was being learned. Whenever someone would leave the company, attend a conference or perform R&D the pain surfaced. Like many companies they used Dropbox, Outlook, Yammer, Evernote, Trello, and Basecamp amongst other “productivity tools” to help them manage the problem. In some use cases they worked great. For information management and group learning they utterly failed.
So, they decided to take a crack at coming up with a solution of their own. Shelf is the result of our team’s labor of love and desire to push the boundaries of group learning. In creating Shelf, they added a Harvard Librarian, a PhD in the Semantic Web and a former Country Manager of Accenture to help design, execute and manage their vision. They also added a ninja force of engineers. The team is growing and constantly evolving as they look for the best and brightest to join them in creating a world class organization.
